Missions Trips 2008

Want to stay up-to-date on everything you need to know about this year’s Mission Trips? If so go to www.gvccmissions.com. This website has been set up to communicate important trip information, to ask questions about a trip, to download forms, and to find out about training dates. This site is open to anyone planning on going on a trip this year.

Promotion for this year’s trips start this weekend. Applications can be picked up at the Community Care Tent, Lobby display board, or by downloading the pdf file from the website. Applications are due by March 14th. If you, or someone you know, plans on participating this year make sure to get the application, along with the deposit, in as soon as possible. Spots will be saved on a first-come-first serve basis for those participants who have their deposit in and an approved application. This might not seem that important, but spots are limited to 16 people per week for DC, and 60 people total for Mexico.

Guest Speaker Weekend Service March 8-9

“Christians are supposed to represent Christ to the world. But according to the latest report card, something has gone terribly wrong. Using descriptions like “hypocritical,” “insensitive,” and “judgmental,” young Americans share an impression of Christians that’s nothing short of . . . unChristian. “

We will be starting a new weekend series February 16-17 titled “unChristian”. This series is based off the same book title by authors David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons. Along with this insightful and challenging series, for new and old Christians, we will have the honor of hearing David Kinnaman speak at our weekend services on March 8-9.

Focus 2008 Update

Focus 2008 - Leadership Conference is a little over 2-months away. It seems like a ways off, but it will be here before you know it. By now you should have your brochures to hand out to your leaders/volunteers. If you need more there are some at the Information Center. Let everyone know that they can register online at www.gvcconline.net.

We have opened this Conference up to non-GVCC members. If you have contacts at other church or know someone you would like to attend please send them a brochure or email with the link for registering. Pricing for the Conference is as follows:

Cost per person GVCC Member:  $100.00 Individual, $150.00 Couple
Cost per person Non-Member:  $125.00 Individual, $200 Couple

If you have someone that can only attend the evening sessions (we prefer they attend all sessions for the biggest impact) we do have pricing available for this. Let Tara or I know and we will get them registered.

Christmas Eve

Hi all!

The Café is closed on Christmas Eve and there will be many people serving most of the day.  With this in mind, we will be having meat and cheese platters available in the kitchen for any staff or volunteer (serving most of the day) to grab a quick bite.  Again, this is primarily for people who are serving for several services as it is difficult to get away for lunch.

Also – a quick reminder that all staff are expected to serve at one service and attend one service.  Each holiday I hear mumblings (I know, hard to believe with this group, no one expresses their opinion J) of why staff is expected to attend, there was nothing to do.  Here are a few suggestions:

1) Most Important is creating a “buzz” in our lobby.  Hang out, greet people, help pass out cookies or help at the coffee bar.  We want people to enter a fun and exciting place; first impressions are created before the band even begins.  We will have LOTS of visitors!

2) Check with Tanya, if you like to hold babies, I am sure nursery can use your help here. (childcare only available in the nursery).

3) Check with Ushers, with this being a workday sometimes they can use extra help.
4) Check out our facilities, trash emptied, paper towels in bathroom…also, there will be plenty of cars with presents in them, walk around the parking lot, if people are visible, less chance of break-ins.

Anyway – holidays are a hectic time for everyone, so thank you in advance.  Pick a service that works best for you and your family and have fun.

Life Skills Spring Semester

The new class catalogs are here. Make sure to take the time and look through the classes offered this semester. You never know when you might meet someone who needs one of our classes. A big "Great Job!" to Cindi for putting this all together. Please make sure to help support her and her teachers as the semester begins.

New this year: People can register for a class and purchase their class books online. Hopefully this feature will be up and running by 12/5/07. If you have someone having problems with the online registration please direct them to me.

Spirit of Christmas

Well the Christmas Season has begun. Where did the year go? The following post will give you information on all the details for Spirit of Christmas. Hopefully this will answer all of your questions. New this year is a room dedicated just for kids 10-17. I don’t know how they did it but Renee and Michelle talked the High School ministry into taking ownership of this room. There will be games, food and activities in room 203 for this group. Guess which room I’ll be hanging out in?

THREE WAYS TO GIVE

SHARING your time by volunteering: A volunteer can serve for the full time, 8:00am-1:00pm, or they can serve just for a short amount of time. The best thing to do for someone you can’t stay for the full 5 hours is to ask them to write down on the volunteer sheet what hours they are available. The following is the areas that we need help in: Food preparation and servers Greeters Tear down and clean up teams Children’s activities: arts and crafts, face painting, etc Santa’s helpers Set up team for Friday December 7th, 2:00pm until done.

LOVING the children of Door of Faith Orphanage. We are collecting donations of socks and underwear for the children. All donations can be turned in at the Church Office or the Community Care tent during the weekends. Deadline is December 8th.

GIVING a stocking filled with toys and gifts is an easy and much needed way to help. We are in need of stocking for four different age groups. The list of suggested items and age groups is available at the display in the Lobby. The biggest need for stockings is for the age group of 10-17. This group always seems to be forgotten each year. Deadline for these items is December 2nd and donations can be turned in at the Community Care tent or the Church Office.

We all know that the week leading up to Christmas is very busy with walk-ins. If you can hang around during this week and hold off taking time off this will really help with the influx of people needing help. We will also need spare stockings filled with gifts for this group of people coming in for help.

Leadership Conference 2008

A few changes this year regarding our annual Leadership Retreat.  Due to inclement weather the past two years we have chosen to host this event here at GVCC and it is evolving to more of a leadership/volunteer celebration featuring Brennan Manning.

Currently working on promotional material - but here are a few things to be aware of:

1.  Dates:  February 24 - 26, 2008.  The conference will begin around 5:00 on Sunday, concluding at noon on Tuesday.  Cost will be $100 per person / $150 per couple (includes meals, supplies, Brennan Manning).  There will be no cost for staff since you will be involved (i.e., music, audio/visual, hospitality, small group leaders, set-up/clean-up, etc.). Please remember the office will be closed and no other events should be scheduled during this time.

2.  Activities:  Looking for activity ideas during breaks.  Maybe someone would like to teach a class, we can host a movie, do a scavenger hunt?  We are still looking at this like a "retreat" type event, so don't want people sneaking back to work to get stuff done.  Time is available on Monday afternoon for fun and games!

3.  Promotion:  In the past we have mailed invitations, this will year I will be promoting church-wide (I will mail brochures to people who have come to the Leadership Retreat in the past, otherwise people's feelings get hurt when someone they know receives and invite and they didn't).  I will also provide brochures to all staff to bring to their ministry meetings.

Remember - have your teams mark their calendars! This is an event that is not be missed!!
